Предназначен для закрытия верхнего летка. С помощью заградителя пчеловод на свое усмотрение может менять размер летка. Это делается для проветривания улья, защиты от птиц и мышей во время зимовки, для поддержания нужной температуры улья, а также при дезинфекции улья.

Заградитель состоит из двух элементов. Один из них статичный, второй подвижный с отверстиями для прохождения пчел. Задвижка заградителя имеет загнутый край для удобства в работе. Полимерное покрытие защищает заградитель от коррозии.
